Serious Child & My Girl The River

Fri 6 Dec, 7:45pm
The Leconfield Hall, £15

“I am about to utter the most fearsome words in folk,” says Alan Young, aka Serious Child.  “This is a song about my grandmother – and it’s a singalong.” - Arts Republic

With a poet’s ear for emotion and a comedian’s eye for everyday detail, Serious Child draws from a wide range of musical styles from folk to pop to bossa nova.

To celebrate the launch of his fourth album, What Lies Beneath, he will be joined by Louisiana country singer, My Girl The River, who guests on the record. This will be the second date of a joint UK tour, where they play on each other’s songs, and typically fall about laughing.

Sussex folk pop meets Louisiana Americana

Serious Child & Jo Beth Young - As Good As It Gets

“writes about Britain today in a way that is almost tactile… with wit, style, intelligence and bags of melody” ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑ Spiral Earth

Kris Wilkinson Hughes aka My Girl the River is a Louisiana native who has landed in the UK via a decade performing in Nashville.

With her ‘sugared espresso’ vocals and sharp writing, Kris is funny, warm and feisty with a sackful of hook laden songs. She last played Petworth a couple of years ago with the ARC Songwriters, which was one of our all time favourite Sessions, and led to her working with Serious Child.

Expect to find yourself singing along or quietly listening as you go on a journey of truth, heartache and mystery.

‘A lovely mélange of Americana-Roots music brings to mind works by other fellow alt-country musicians Jason Isbell and Lucinda Williams…. exceptional songwriting. ‘ - ★★★★ Paste Magazine
